Artist Statement
As a Peruvian American artist with Indigenous roots, my work explores the relationship between ancestry, identity, and place. Growing up in the San Fernando Valley, I experienced life between two cultures, where my family’s traditions and stories of Peru shaped my understanding of who I am. Although I was raised in Los Angeles, I have always felt deeply connected to my Indigenous heritage, inspiring me to create work that honors the resilience, beauty, and history of my ancestors.
Through painting, I preserve cultural narratives that are often passed down through memory rather than written history. Inspired by the landscapes of Peru, Indigenous traditions, and the labor of those who have cared for the land for generations, my work celebrates the strength and dignity found in everyday life. Rather than depicting specific moments, I create scenes that evoke remembrance, belonging, and the emotional ties between people and the places they call home.
Color plays an essential role in my practice. I use rich, vibrant palettes to reflect the warmth of memory and the enduring spirit of Indigenous communities. My figures are often anonymous, allowing them to represent shared experiences rather than individual identities, emphasizing the collective stories that connect generations.
My paintings are both personal reflections and acts of cultural preservation. They honor the traditions that have shaped my family while inviting viewers to consider their own histories and the ways identity is carried through landscape, storytelling, and memory. Through my work, I hope to create space for reflection, connection, and a deeper appreciation for the cultures that continue to shape our lives.
